An Open Door to the North East's Online Heritage Stores

Unique and unusual gifts from the region's cultural and heritage centres

Looking for a present that's just a little bit different? Go online to www.thenortheast.com The UK's first region-wide, one-stop shop for buying heritage and historical memorabilia and merchandise.

Our region's museums, libraries and archives have brought their online shops together into one place where you will be able to buy that unique and unusual gift. A wide variety of the North East's cultural and heritage organisations
now sell online. You are sure to find a great surprise for that special someone. Are they passionate about miltaria? Are they artistic? Do they really love EVERYTHING to do with local history? www.thenortheast.com is the doorway
to inspiring gift ideas.

June Parker who led the development of the new website says :" www.thenortheast.com is totally different. It offers the shopper access to the past - it could be a book no longer in print or even booking a family ticket to Beamish museum"

Neil Bowerbank Head of eStrategy at MLA North East notes: "The funding for this website has come from the Regional Development Agency Single Programme, European Regional Development Fund and MLA North East. The
partners firmly believe the new website will successfully generate additional income for the North East and, hopefully, convince its users that the North East is the place to visit to enjoy our history, our museums, our libraries and our archives.

Lara Robinson who has worked across the region with the museums, libraries and archives online stores says
" We have everything on sale - from membership of the prestigious Literary and Philosophical Society of Newcastle upon Tyne, the largest independent library outside London - through to teach yourself electronics for budding science enthusiasts. Local history is in huge demand. www.thenortheast.com is the ideal place to find reproductions of old photographs, rare prints and specialist books."

Living Streets' Walk to School Campaign

Living Streets are the champions of streets and public spaces for people on foot. They work on practical projects to create safe, vibrant and healthy streets for all.

Their belief is that "local streets are a service that we all use but that for decades, traffic priorities have been allowed to overwhelm them, and they have been left dirty and unsafe. Vibrant streets help to revitalise neighbourhoods and reconnect people."

Living Streets organises two national Walk to School campaigns every year.
Read on for the details and contact information, but the campaign meets on the fourth Tuesday at Gateshead Civic Centre at 6.45pm, nine times a year (not Christmas, Easter or August)...

Extended Schools seminar in London

The Centre for Public Policy Seminars is holding a Seminar on Delivering Extended Schools That Really Work on the Ground at The Royal Commonwealth Society in London on Monday 5th June 2006.

LIMITED PLACES AVAILABLE

Extended schools and Every Child Matters are central strands of government policy. They impact fundamentally on the ethos, activities, staffing, management and leadership of schools. Just how the policies can best work on the ground remains somewhat vague. This seminar looks at the national context and then examines in detail how policies are being made to work in one inner London comprehensive.

By 2010, schools will provide a range of services and activities, often beyond the traditional school day, to meet the needs of children, their families and the wider community.

How will we meet this target?

How well are challenges and opportunities being met? What are the obstacles and pitfalls to change? How are different stake-holders reacting and performing?

What more needs to be done to assure success? How do we achieve a sustainable win-win result for all?
This CPPS seminar, with key national and local players seeks answers
Bookings for this event can be made online at our website www.cppseminars.org.uk
We can also send you a booking form by fax if you call our booking line on (01422) 845004
We look forward to seeing you there

St Anne's Primary School recommends...

Connie Megginson, Headteacher at St Anne's Primary School, Harlow Green, Gateshead reports:
"Six of my teachers had an INSET day at the National Gallery in London on Friday the 26th of November and said it was one of the best they've had. They have come back really inspired. The web site is wonderful and it is good to use on an interactive white board for whole class teaching. They were given lots of ideas for cross curricular work and we are entering a competition where our work could end up in the gallery! We were the only school outside London attending that day - quite adventurous for us."Connie added that the fee was only £55 per teacher and that she got a good hotel and train deal, too. Demand is high - she booked this a year in advance!

Centre for the Children's Book - Newcastle

British books for children are the envy of the world. Countries abroad have national centres dedicated to children's books but until now no such Centre has existed in the UK.

In 2005, the first British centre celebrating children's books will open in an imaginatively converted Victorian mill in the Ouseburn Valley, Newcastle upon Tyne.

A magnet for visitors of all ages CCB will invite you on an ever-changing journey through the world of children's books. Sparking your imagination and awakening you to the endless possibilities for creating words and pictures.

Your journey will be full of surprises from unconventional exhibitions to entertaining and challenging events and activities - some inspired by CCB's growing collection of original manuscripts and artwork which celebrates the creative process - others introducing you to work travelling from abroad.
