Great North Museum shortlisted for Family Friendly Award
After being nominated by the public,
The Great North Museum has been shortlisted for The Guardian Family Friendly Museum Award. The 2010 Manifesto has been compiled from families' suggestions of ways in which museums can offer fantastic experiences. It's a practical and powerful tool to encourage and support museums and galleries around the country to make family visits more enjoyable.
How your family can get involved: From the shortlist, families will decide on this year's winner. Each shortlisted museum will be visited, anonymously, by several families of all shapes and sizes. They will measure the museum against the Kids in Museums Manifesto - 20 ways to make a museum family friendly - compiled entirely from visitors' comments. If you'd like to be considered as a judging family for the Award, just email award@kidsinmuseums.org.uk
Have you had a great time visiting a museum with children or young people? Why not leave a comment about it!

Kids Go Free at Castle Keep

School visits to the Castle Keep are now free of charge. This applies to both the children and accompanying adults. Guided tours are also free of charge.
The Society of Antiquities encourages the use of the Castle Keep as a learning resource. It is particularly appropriate for the study of local history in years 4, 5 and 6 (Key Stage 2). The Castle Keep was central to the development of Newcastle as a settlement. It also played a role in the Civil War. The Castle Keep is built upon the site of a Roman fort (Pons Aelius), an Anglo-Saxon cemetery and a Norman motte and bailey castle, from which the City takes its name. It may also be illustrative in the medieval studies of years 7 to 9 (Key Stage 3).

'Frogman' @ Caedmon Hall 22nd June
Bent Architect present:
FROG MAN by Mick Martin
‘Surreal, twisted and absolutely funny’ – Edinburgh Guide
Friday 22nd June @ 6.30 pm, Caedmon Hall.
Following on from a highly successful run at this years’ Edinburgh Fringe Festival and a one off (entirely sold out!) performance at Wakefield Arts Centre in October, Frog Man is on the loose once again in 2007!
From a suburban nightmare to sub aquatic bliss – this is a story of love, bullying and the turgid waters of domestic life. It begins one fateful afternoon down by the canal when Kenny and Kelly, two ordinary kids, steal Adrian Dunfor’s kite and their game goes horribly wrong…
Now Kenny is a police frogman and Kelly has dreadful asthma. They live at 46 Sunnybrook Meadow and drive a 4x4 in case anyone tries to murder them on the way to the supermarket. But that afternoon is with them still...
“Wonderfully sardonic pitch-black comedy. Witty one-liners abound throughout… Glorious and innovative - left me breathless
Three Weeks Magazine
“George Orwell meets Nick Hornby, but with a plus…
The Observer
Written by award winning MICK MARTIN, (Once Upon A Time In Wigan, The Life & Times of Young Bob Scallion) and directed by JUDE WRIGHT.
Frog Man is very funny - but with dark and at times disturbing overtones. The production appeals to established drama attendees and new audiences alike. It carries the personal recommendation of Alison Andrews, Arts Council Yorkshire Performance Arts Officer amongst others.
This show is suitable for audiences aged 14 upwards.
Running time approx 70 minutes

Santa Reads Braille too!
This message is from Karen Hannah, Social Inclusion Manager for Gateshead Council.
If you have any friends or colleagues who would appreciate a Christmas card in Braille, AIRS can help. We can Braille your own personal message on to any standard card for a very reasonable £1.00. If you stamp and address your envelope, we can even post it out for you! You can send cards to us via your local library or call in to see us at Prince Consort Road - we’re to the left of the Reception desk, opposite the Training Centre.
As well as featuring festive content on our talking newspaper service in the run up to Christmas, the Bishop of Durham and the Bishop of Hexham & Newcastle will be calling in soon to record their annual Christmas messages for our listeners.
Rather than socks or soap, what about an unusual stocking filler or present for that elderly relative or friend who is so hard to buy for and isn’t able to read that well any more? The AIRS talking newspaper service lasts the whole year through and is absolutely free to people in Gateshead. There are four different tapes a week containing news, features, a what’s on, interviews, quizzes, talking book reviews and more. You can try out a copy from your local library or just contact us for a free sample tape at AIRS, Gateshead Central Library, Prince Consort Road. Tel. 0191 433 8450 or email airs@gateshead.gov.uk. The service is also available for a small annual subscription outside the borough, anywhere else in the UK.

A Gateshead teacher's report of a school visit
Durham Cathedral is one of the Ambassadors’ network Cultural Partners. Here is an account of a recent visit by one Gateshead School this year by Mrs Anne-Marie Ollivere of Oakfield Infant School.
“This is the third year in a row that I have taken my year two class to Durham Cathedral. We tend to go as part of our Christianity topic in the Autumn term. The children are always amazed by the sheer size of the cathedral and it brings the lives of Cuthbert and Bede to life for them. During the visit there are lots of activities to keep the children busy. In the morning session we have always been given a thorough tour of the cathedral, pointing out many interesting facts. This year it was most impressive as the children were encouraged to touch and feel, which really appealed to the younger children.
The afternoon session is made up of a series of workshops, one of which was to decorate one section of the rose window. When we got back to school we were able to put all of the sections together to create our very own stained glass window. We have great memories of the visit and we will definitely be going again next academic year. “

LEVIATHAN!

This photograph courtesy of Mark Savage
Leviathan is Gateshead Council’s programme of thirty community projects funded by Culture10 and Arts Council England North East, such as Neptune's Arc of Friendship procession where Gateshead and Newcastle children will take sea monsters and flags to the crew parade on Tues 26th July; Flotilla!,: an exhibition at Gateshead Visitor Centre of thirty handcrafted boats made by locally-connected artists and community workshops from July 15th and What Floats your Boat?: a community flag project about hopes and aspirations to be installed on Baltic Square on Sunday 24th July.
The photo refers to this year’s Wrekenton & Springwell Happy Hearts Lanterns Procession where children from Fell Dyke Primary made ships to celebrate the Tall Ships and Rivers Festival.
Leviathan was not only a mythical sea monster, but also the name of the ship in Nelson’s fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar, with Master & Commander Trotter at the helm. This year is the bicentenary of the battle and Commander Trotter is buried here in Gateshead, in St Mary’s Churchyard. Call for music news for Gateshead Schools
Julia Mitford sends this message to Gateshead teachers...
ExploreMusic, Gateshead's new library and information service within The Sage Gateshead, and ExploreMusic Online our web based service, both aim to provide local music information and resources for anyone with a passion for music in the region. As part of our information provision, on our home page we feature music news, and are trying to encorporate as much local news as possible.
We are extremely keen to promote the fantastic creative work which is happening in schools throughout the region and most importantly within Gateshead itself. We think that the News section of our website would be an ideal place to inform the region about all of your hard work.
So, if you have any news about music work, projects, achievements or anything else musical within your school then please send it to us at any time. We just need a few paragraphs of text, a headline if you are feeling creative, any photographs if possible to liven up the page, plus weblinks either to your school website or other relevant websites.
You can send this to us via email exploremusic@gateshead.gov.uk or by post to:
ExploreMusic - School News,
The Sage Gateshead,
St Mary's Square,
Gateshead Quays,
NE8 2JR.
Feel free to visit our website to get a flavour for our current news www.gateshead.gov.uk/exploremusic and to ring me if you would like to discuss this any further.
Don't forget you can also book to bring a class to learn how to use Sibelius software for music composition, and watch out for news about our new software packages - Cubasis, Reason, Acid and Soundforge.

CTC Theatre's Leonardo recommended by Kells Lane Primary, Gateshead
"Have you heard of 'Leonardo' - a celebration of Technology and Invention? It is one of Cleveland Theatre Company's travelling presentations and as the workshop unfolds, the machine is built - it is quite staggering to see and a super way to link technology and literacy work. They also do Good Morning Mr Dickens which is a splendid way to teach writing to a deadline, descriptive and transactional writing and redrafting. Chris Connaughton plays Charles Dickens orally drafting a new scene from Nicholas Nickleby and he recalls writing a similar scene in another story which he changes slightly and reuses. Then he teaches them about the social history of the period and gets the children to write to a deadline imagining the classroom is the workhouse. At the end of the day he hotseats as a Dickens character and it is quite inspiring to see him change from Mr Squeers to Smike... as he fields the questions in role."
Strongly recommended.
Di Hewitson
Headteacher, Kells Lane Primary. Gateshead Ambassador teachers should find two CTC fliers in their Spring Packs.

St Anne's Primary School recommends...
Connie Megginson, Headteacher at St Anne's Primary School, Harlow Green, Gateshead reports:
"Six of my teachers had an INSET day at the National Gallery in London on Friday the 26th of November and said it was one of the best they've had. They have come back really inspired. The web site is wonderful and it is good to use on an interactive white board for whole class teaching. They were given lots of ideas for cross curricular work and we are entering a competition where our work could end up in the gallery! We were the only school outside London attending that day - quite adventurous for us."Connie added that the fee was only £55 per teacher and that she got a good hotel and train deal, too. Demand is high - she booked this a year in advance!
