Now more than ever as the arts, culture and learning worlds tighten their belts we need to step up the offer to our children and young people. Enriching the curriculum and having the capacity for innovative and lateral thought is vital for developing real creativity in the way a generation can think. We need to change behaviours so that our young people become the cultural 'users' and we cannot let them down by excluding them from this resource through lack of funding and rising costs of engagement. We have to find the third way, the affordable way, the way that meets both the needs of the arts and cultural sector as well as the learning sector.

Over my tenure working with arts in education programmes I have observed that the cultural sector clearly has a need to develop new audiences and future customers, but risking the investment in children and youth programmes is costly and really only possible where the organisation can afford to play the long game in the hope that ultimately they are building the audiences and consumers of the future. Not many artistic organisations can really centre their whole educational and outreach programme based on the purely altruistic premise that they are doing it for the greater good, enhancing learning and raising achievement in our young people.

They sometimes feel as if 'letting go' of the learning exchange marginalises their role leaving them only with the 'assessment task' to see if the targets were met.

Jointly promoted in schools and youth settings, the Kite Mark is given to successful projects that are inspired by a pack that provides resources and guidance, including details of regional sports and cultural venues, to create learning that is fun and uses culture, sports and the arts to enhance learning and make it an adventure. The programme relies on creative adults working with, teaching or caring for children creating their own projects and responding to the challenge and sharing their learning adventure with the rest of us through the web-site. The first awards are to 10 schools in Gateshead who are all working with Dora Frankel Dance Company to create 10 x 3 min 'Dance Bites' pieces inspired by one of the 10 Olympic Sports represented in the UK School Games 2010.

Gateshead is an Arts Explorer pilot, working with foster families and the looked after children in their care to develop habits and behaviours of becoming more frequent and better informed cultural 'users'. This is helping to build cultural memories and legacies for the children and support the families in exploring the region's cultural opportunities as a means of enhancing the parental offer they provide for these young people. The project hinges around making the best use of what is already on offer. The vital ingredient is a team of 'Cultural Shoppers' who negotiate with the families, challenging them to explore the arts and cultural world and support them through the barriers that currently prevent them from choosing cultural activities as a great way to spend family time together. The foster families and the children are linked together through private, secure web-space where they input their experiences and views and leave messages for other explorers. In this way information sharing and gathering goes alongside evaluation and data gathering. We are learning about the experience of these traditionally hard to reach families and their changing attitudes and behaviours.

TV company Mentorn media is looking for inspirational children and young people whose stories they could follow for a documentary they're producing for ITV 1, provisionally entitled "The Children of Britain."

The programme will be a portrait of children in Britain today that celebrates children and young people, and puts their lives and achievements in the spotlight. They are looking for children aged 6-14 whose stories reflect a range of different backgrounds and experiences.

They are looking for:

A Young Carer: a child or young person who is caring for a member of their family who has a physical disability.

A child with a creative passion or a talent that they are pursuing to a high level: someone who is extraordinary not just because of their potential, but because of the circumstances in which they are realising it.

A child from a refugee or asylum-seeking family who are new to Britain: someone who, despite the challenges of linguistic and cultural adjustment, is thriving, and has big dreams and ambitions for the future.

A child or young person who has felt at risk of offending, or who has offended before, but who is pursuing a new goal in life, no matter how big or small.

If this sounds like someone you know, and they are aged between 6-14, then they would like to hear from you. Please get in touch with Sarah: srobinson@mentorn.tv, or Sian, srobins-grace@mentorn.tv. Or you can call 0207 258 6823 or 0207 258 6725.

This year's short plays, written by Luyanda, Zinzi, Odete, Didi, Dean and Jade are guaranteed to have you roaring with delight. The children have been working with Drama Workers and Literary Officers to write original plays which will now be performed by professional actors. Live Theatre has challenged a host of established actors and emerging new talent to take on a series of off-the-wall characters.

What is First Draft?

A Drama Worker and Literary Officer from Live Theatre visited Christ Church Primary School in early 2010 to deliver a series of interactive workshops giving pupils the chance to discover all of the ingredients that go into making a good play.

The 30 children involved selected their six favourite stories and the lucky authors then spent an exclusive weekend at Live Theatre working on a one-to-one basis with a professional writer to develop their story into a 10 minute script for two actors to perform. The children then got to meet their cast and director and have the final say on how their tales are told.

The aim is that the young people involved will have an experience they will never forget.

In pairs, the children worked with ceramic artist Sally Danys to create a range of colourful farm animal tiles. These were fired and glazed by Sally, and returned to the school to make a stunning display.

Lapwing Crafts deliver workshops in a range of arts and crafts, including felt making, textile collage, hooky and proggy mat making, silk painting, mosaics and much more.
