Competition: Design a light!
There are some fantastic prizes up for grabs in this competition, and with the deadline in the second week of the autumn term, its a great way for schools to get their year off to a creative start!
Children are asked to draw a design based on a seasonal theme, and the winning design will be made into a light that will be displayed in Gateshead town centre. The winning design will be reproduced as a line drawing, as close to the original as possible. This drawing will be interpreted by Blanchere Illumination UK, to create a light using an aluminium frame and coloured rope light.

What we're looking for:
Teachers are asked to discuss with children possible designs for a light. Designs may be based on a Christmas or a winter theme. Although themes will overlap, the judges are looking for something designed independently by a child.
Designs should be:
· In colour, (although black cannot be reproduced in rope light, so purple or blue will need to be used instead).
· Simple (please emphasise to children that the light will be high up on a lamp post so will need to be clearly visible from a distance).
The prize:
- Two lights will be made, depicting the winner's design. One will hang in Gateshead town centre, and the winner's school will keep the other.
- A free bus will take the winner's class to Gateshead Civic Centre for tea with the Mayor and Mayoress on Friday 20 November.
- Following the tea, the winner's class will be invited to sing carols and officially switch on the Christmas lights.
- The winner's school will receive £250 to put towards creative work of their choice within school.
