4. Become a Climate Change Lead School in the North East!

Climate Change Schools Project

A pioneering approach to teaching climate change has taken off in the North East. Eighty visionary schools have signed up to become the region's new Climate Change Lead Schools who, by July 2009, will have piloted an innovative method of putting climate change at the heart of the national curriculum. They will help pave the way for what is hoped will become a national programme of positive climate change education and action, led by the North East and our young people.

The Climate Change Schools Project, which supports the Lead Schools network, aims to bring climate change to life in a creative, dynamic and cross-curricular way for Key Stages 2 and 3. Its overall goal is to help young people understand that it is their generation who have an amazing opportunity to change the world. Lead Schools have access to specially produced materials developed by inspiring North East teachers and undergo tailored continuing professional development courses to help establish themselves in the network and expand their leadership skills.

The project will open a new round of "Expressions of Interest" to become a 2009-10 Climate Change Lead School on the 11th May. To find out more about the Climate Change Schools Project, please contact Dr. Krista McKinzey, Climate Change Schools Project Officer, Science Learning Centre North East, Front Street, Pity Me, Durham, DH1 5BZ or email krista.mckinzey@durham.ac.uk. St James' Park, Newcastle

Tuesday, 7 July 2009, 9:30 - 3:30

This free one day course is organised by ATLAS who support the International School Award in the North East. With the World Cup taking place in South Africa in 2010 and the London Olympics in 2012, our young people will be charting the sporting ambitions of teams and athletes from all across the globe. We want to build on this interest and help our learning communities to capitalise on teaching and learning opportunities presented by these international events.

The course will take delegates through all aspects of school linking and offer advice for curriculum activities with partner schools. Delegates will be able to reflect on where in the world they would like to develop links and learn about available support. The conference is particularly suited to schools which are at the early stages of international work, but will also provide an excellent insight in to international and global dimensions for more experienced practitioners, school advisers, improvement partners and inspectors.

16. Education for Sustainable Development: Graduates as Global Citizens

Bournemouth University

10 -11 September 2009

'In an increasingly globalised world there is widespread acceptance of the importance of 'internationalising" higher education and giving students the skills to enable them to operate effectively across boundaries.' (Bill Rammell 2007) But what does an international education involve? How do we facilitate the development of 'active global citizens' (Lammy 2008) who also understand the need for sustainable development?

This third 'Education for Sustainable Development: graduates as global citizens' conference addresses these overlapping but equally important themes. The organisers adhere to the belief that these are not separate issues: holistic approaches that encompass all aspects of university life are important if higher education is to contribute effectively to global sustainability.

The conference aims to bring together participants who are taking forward sustainable development and global citizenship within the context of Further/Higher Education. This may be through learning, teaching and assessment, student support, extra curricular activities, and initiatives that demonstrate to students and staff that universities are addressing sustainable development.

For further details on registration and submitting papers please visit the conference website www.bournemouth.ac.uk/about/the_global_dimension/centre_for_global_perspectives/global_citizens09.html.
